Alcohol regulations in Dubai: fines, age limits and everything you need to know
If you’re planning on drinking in Dubai, it’s important to know the rules. You must be 21 years of age or older to purchase or consume alcohol there. Please note the following:
1. Restaurant: Alcohol may only be consumed in specially licensed restaurants or lounges. Drinking alcohol in public places is prohibited.
2. At Home: With special permission, you may drink alcohol at home.
No Drink & Drive:
The UAE has a strict policy against drunk driving.
The violator is subject to a fine that will be decided by court, along with 23 black points with your vehicle being confiscated for 60 days. If you are caught driving under the influence, you could be fined, have points deducted from your license, or have your vehicle impounded for a period of time. In 2022, a British man was sentenced to one month in prison and 30 days of damage to his car for causing an accident while driving drunk.
Buying Alcohol: You need a license to buy alcohol in Dubai, but it’s now easier to get one. You can apply online or visit certain stores. There are two main stores: African Eastern and MMI.
